The ad hominem fallacy (argument against the person) occurs when one arguer presents his point and the second arguer ignores the point, instead attacking the character of his opponent. The appeal to wealth fallacy works so well because not only do people assume rich people must have gotten rich because they are smarter, but they also assume poor people must be poor because they are not as smart, or good, as others.
